Coup Plot Case: 2 Civilians, Police Officer Charged

In a press release issued last week The Gambia Government announced that two civilians and a police officer have been charged with concealment of treason and felony conspiracy in connection to the coup plot incident that was reported in end of December 2022.

In the wake of the recently foiled coup plot to unseat the democratically-elected Government of President Adama Barrow, investigators have linked two men, Mr. Mustapha Jabbi, a resident of Brikama and Mr. Saikuba Jabbi, resident of Brusubi, both in the West Coast Region and a Police Officer, Sub Inspector Fakebba Jawara of The Gambia Police Force assigned to Abuko Police Station, to the foiled scheme, the release stated.

The suspects, it added, were arrested on Friday, 30th December 2022 and arraigned before the Banjul Magistrates Court today, Tuesday, 3rd January 2023 and charged with concealment of treason and conspiracy to commit a felony.

It further revealed that all three (3) are now remanded at the Mile II State Central Prisons.

Government assured that investigations into the alleged coup plot are continuing and members of the public would be accordingly informed of any further developments.

On December 21st 2022 The Gambia Government issued a press release announcing that it got intelligence reports that some soldiers of the Gambian army were plotting to overthrow the democratically elected Government of President Adama Barrow. It reported that the GAF High Command in a swift military operation had arrested four soldiers, linked to the alleged coup plot. It also revealed that the army was in pursuit of three more alleged accomplices.

Furthermore, in another press statement that ensued Government said it inaugurated a Joint Investigative Panel to investigate the foiled coup plot.

The multi-sectoral Panel draws membership from the Ministry of Justice, Office of National Security (ONS), The Gambia Armed Forces (GAF), The Gambia Police Force (GPF) and the State Intelligence Service (SIS) to exhaustively, professionally and impartially investigate the alleged coup plot.

 Consistent with the due process of the law, the 11-member Panel was sworn to an Oath of Secrecy administered by the Solicitor General, Ministry of Justice

It said the investigators have thirty days effective 27th December 2022 to investigate, prepare and submit their report on the alleged coup plot.
