The Ministry of Agriculture is now set to be called Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Security, according to the Ministry of Information Honourable Dr Ismaila Ceesay.
The Information Minister made this revelation while briefing the press on the outcome of the 11th cabinet meeting held on Thursday, March 28th 2024 at State House.
The proposal for the name change was contained in the Agriculture Minister Honourable Dr. Demba Sabally’s cabinet paper, as part of key policy proposals he presented before cabinet.
“Cabinet supported the proposal to rename the Ministry of Agriculture to incorporate Livestock and Food Security, acknowledging the vital role of livestock farming in strengthening food production and ensuring food security across the country,” Minister Ceesay informed.
He went on: “The ministry of Agriculture is the mandated and competent authority for both crop and livestock agriculture in The Gambia.  In some countries in the sub-region the ministry is named Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, and this harmonization is the main clog around the sub-region”.
Moreover, Dr Ceesay further disclosed that Cabinet has also approved Agric Minister’s proposal to  establish Farmers and Herders’ Day, locally called ‘senela     lungo’ in Mandinka or besi beykat’ in Wollof, and ‘nyalandeh gainako’ in Fula, respectively.  This, he explained is to recognize and celebrate the invaluable contributions of farmers and herders to the nation’s sustenance. “This special occasion will serve as a tribute to the tireless efforts of crop and livestock farmers in nourishing the populace and driving agricultural prosperity,” he stated.
