The Minister of Information, Dr. Ismaila Ceesay, disclosed that the 12th Cabinet session, held on Thursday, 4th April, 2024, approved a proposal by Minister of Transport, Works and Infrastructure, Hon. Ebrima Sillah, seeking The Gambia’s membership of the International Hydrographic Organisation (IHO).
Highlighting the significance of IHO in a post-session media briefing, Minister Ceesay said it is an inter-governmental consultative organisation renowned for setting standards for hydrographic surveys and chart publications, offering technical advice and facilitating capacity building for member states to fulfill their hydrographic responsibilities.
‘‘As a member state, The Gambia is going to develop its own National Hydrographic Services (NHS) where it can conduct hydrographic surveys, improve navigation safety and promote environmental marine protection, as well as promote national development,’’ he stated.
The Minister informed that the proposal received unanimous support from Cabinet, as it was deemed non-controversial.
This move signifies The Gambia’s commitment to harnessing international expertise and resources to advance its maritime sector and contribute to regional maritime endeavours.
