The Centre for Media and Civic Awareness (CMCA) on Friday, January 20th held its official launching and training for journalists on Public Procurement Investigation, at the University of The Gambia School of Journalism and Digital Media.
CMCA is a newly created independent, non-partisan and not-for-profit Civil Society Organisation, founded in July 2022. Officials say it was established “to fill in that palpable void in the CSO with adequate professional capacity and competence in the media, law and communications”.
Famara Fofana, the Executive Director of CMCA, said the main goal is to contribute to the development of the local media industry through many ways including capacity building. “Journalists need to understand the emerging trends and contemporary issues of the day, to have their capacities built and report on issues as they unfold’’.
He argued that journalism goes beyond reporting the news; that it is not enough to tell the story. “They must go on to report the impact of the story on the livelihoods of the people “ he added.
Mr Fofana said CMCA is expected to be a fully-fledged, robust and vibrant organization in the coming years that will be working with key stakeholders like Gambia Press Union and other training institutions such as the University of The Gambia School of Journalism and Digital Media, where knowledge, skills and techniques will be exchanged as well as best practices.
