ECOWAS Mission Holds Negotiations with Malian Interim Leader

His Excellency President Barrow, President Nana Akufo Addo of the Republic of Ghana, Special Envoy,  Goodluck Jonathan, Former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President of ECOWAS Commission, Dr. Omar Touray, and the Foreign Minister of Togo, Mr. Robert Dussey, a representative president Faure Gnassingbé of the Republic of Togo , on 29th September 2022, held a closed-door meeting  with Colonel Assimi Goïta, Military leader of   Mali in  Bamako.

The delegation which was identified by the Authority of the ECOWAS Heads of State and Government during an extraordinary Summit held on the sidelines of the 77th summit of UNGA in New York last week was tasked to negotiate with Colonel Goita to release over 46 Ivorian UN Peacekeepers currently in the custody of Malian authorities since July 2021.

The meeting furthermore charts a robust way forward in support of the democratic transition process of the Republic of Mali.

The Mission is also part of ECOWAS’ drive to promote peace, democracy and development in the West African Sub-region. A report on the outcomes of the engagement will be submitted to the Authority of the ECOWAS Heads of State and Government during an extraordinary Summit in due cause.
