The 2016 protest for electoral reforms, which culminated into a violent event – in the murder of a valiant son of the country, Ebrima Solo Sandeng, has been etched in the annals of the history of this country. A political activist, Sandeng was a patriot who stood tall against injustice and paid the ultimate price for it. Although his story is a tragic one – considering the way and manner he died - it is one that inspired a generation and would do so for many yet to come.
Sandeng has been referred to by many as the man that sacrificed his life for the freedom of Gambians, and a catalyst to the democracy Gambians are now relishing. His death has no doubt left both grief and gratitude in the hearts of people.
However, seven years after his brutal murder by the state intelligence operatives, late Solo Sandeng was finally honoured last week with a state burial and funeral service, much to the pleasure and gratitude of many Gambians, including the family.
The move by government o give the late Ebrima Solo Sandeng a state funeral and final tribute service was something every genuine Gambian was looking forward to, and is indeed commendable. It shows that his sacrifice is not forgotten and his name will go down in history as one of the defenders of justice and democracy.
The Minster of Justice’s recognition that Solo’s legacy has already inspired government’s current reforms agenda and transitional justice process is quite noteworthy.
We hope and pray that the values and ideals for which the late Sandeng died will continue to by upheld by Gambians and in the process of perfecting our nascent democracy.
