The Department of Fisheries has concluded a five-day training for staff on data collection for better fisheries management. The training was held from 20th to 25th February 2024.
In her statement at the opening of the training, Anna Mbenga-Cham, Director of the Department of Fisheries, pointed out the importance of accurate and comprehensive data. “Data serves as the foundation upon which informed decisions are made, policies are shaped, and resources are managed sustainably,” she elucidated. The director said since the mandate of her institution is to protect, conserve and manage the marine resources, it is imperative that the staff have the necessary tools and knowledge to effectively collect, analyse, and utilise data for the betterment of the fisheries sector.
“Therefore, I urge each one of you to actively participate, share your experiences, and engage with your esteemed trainers and fellow participants… [in order] for you to ultimately contribute to the sustainable management of the fisheries resources” she advised.
Madam Mbenga-Cham concluded: “Collectively we can make a meaningful impact and pave the way for a more resilient and prosperous fisheries sector. So let us embark on this journey with determination, enthusiasm, and a shared commitment to excellence”.
