Banjul,15 September 2026: The Government of The Gambia has reaffirmed its commitment to freedom of expression and press freedom, while reminding foreign journalists and international media organisations operating in the country to comply with established accreditation and legal requirements.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Information, Media and Broadcasting Services, the government said it remains committed to supporting the work of both local and international journalists as part of efforts to promote democratic governance, transparency and public accountability.
The Ministry, however, stressed that media freedoms must be exercised within the framework of Gambian law.
The statement follows reports of foreign journalists and international media teams covering public events in The Gambia without the necessary permits, accreditation or authorisation from the relevant authorities.
“The Government of The Gambia remains firmly committed to freedom of the press, freedom of expression, and the legitimate work of journalists, both domestic and international,” the Ministry stated.
It added that compliance with established procedures is necessary to ensure an orderly and professional media environment.
The Ministry also clarified that attendance at or coverage of public events does not automatically exempt foreign journalists from the accreditation requirements governing international media operations in the country.
Foreign journalists currently operating without the required credentials have been advised to suspend their reporting activities and regularise their status through the appropriate administrative channels.
The Ministry warned that individuals or organisations found operating in violation of the requirements could face action in accordance with Gambian law.
At the same time, the government said the accreditation process is intended to facilitate legitimate journalism and encouraged foreign media organisations and visiting correspondents to engage the relevant authorities before undertaking assignments in The Gambia.
The Ministry further encouraged international media personnel seeking clarification on accreditation and entry requirements to contact the Ministry of Information, Media and Broadcasting Services in Banjul.
