The Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Natural Resources, through the Central Project Coordinating Unit, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), recently concluded a week-long training programme for climate change negotiators.
The specialised training was aimed at empowering 25 participants with the essential knowledge, skills, and confidence to actively participate in climate negotiations on a global stage. The training covered a diverse range of topics, including climate science, policy frameworks, and effective negotiation strategies.
It also highlighted the critical role of youth in global climate diplomacy.
In addition to technical expertise, the programme offered participants access to professional networks and mentorship opportunities, ensuring they are well-prepared to represent their countries in international climate discussions.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Principal Assistant Secretary, Mr. Momodou Kanyi, stated that the training workshop came at a critical time. “It will equip our negotiators with the knowledge and skills necessary to advocate effectively for The Gambia on the global stage, especially in upcoming climate discussions”.
He went on: “The stakes are high, and the challenges we face are complex, but with the right strategies and collaborative efforts, we can rise to meet them”.
Mr. Kanyi thanked the participants and stakeholders for their dedication to the cause. He assured the participants that their expertise and commitment are vital to the continual efforts to navigate these challenges, and to the work towards a more resilient and sustainable future for The Gambia.
This initiative is part of efforts to strengthen the skills of the next generation of climate leaders who will champion sustainable and equitable climate policies.
