The officials of the Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (MoHERST) and The Gambia Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (GCCPC) on June 2nd, 2022, convened meeting to discuss ways of collaboration for the assessment of consumer welfare in the tertiary and higher education sector.

GCCPC is a statutory authority under the purview of the Ministry of Trade and Industry composed of five commissioners who are appointed by the President, and headed by a chairperson. Part of their mandate is in accordance with the Consumer Protection Act 2014, aimed to protect consumers from unfair and misleading market conducts, and the establishment of consumer tribunals to treat consumer complaints and related matters.

A request was made by the Commission to have a focal person at  MoHERST who can serve as a liaison and report quarterly on issues regarding consumer protection and competition issues within the sector.

The Ministry welcomes the collaboration and advised the commission to put their request in writing, which will be looked into by Senior Management Team of the Ministry for necessary action.
