The Athletes’ Commission of The Gambia National Olympic Committee (GNOC) has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding athletes’ welfare and strengthening communication between athletes and sports administrators across the country.

The commission, which comprises representatives from nineteen national sports associations, is chaired by Mariyama Gina Bass Bittaye and serves as the official voice of athletes within the GNOC structure.

Speaking to journalists following the successful conclusion of the GNOC’s maiden Athletes’ Forum, the chairperson described the commission as a vital bridge between athletes and the leadership of their respective associations.

“The Athletes’ Commission stands as a mediator between athletes and heads of associations. Our responsibility is to defend athletes’ rights, listen to their concerns, and ensure they receive the support they need to develop and compete successfully,” Bass Bitey said.

She noted that the forum provided the commission with first-hand insights into the challenges faced by athletes, including issues related to welfare, training conditions and access to opportunities. According to her, the discussions and feedback gathered will guide the commission’s engagement with the GNOC, government institutions and other key stakeholders.

Bass Bitaye further emphasised that the commission will continue to advocate for inclusive decision-making, transparency and athlete-centred policies within the country’s sports system.

The Athletes’ Commission is expected to play a key role in shaping future sports policies by ensuring that athletes remain at the centre of planning, development and governance of sports in The Gambia.
