GPF Reaffirm Commitment to Public Safety

The Gambia Police Force (GPF) on Wednesday, 10th January 2024 organised at the Paradise Suites Hotel in Kololi, a three-day event brought together regional police leaders to exchange experiences, provide strategic guideline, raise awareness regarding ongoing security sector reforms, and delineate their crucial roles in enhancing service delivery.   The event is organised annually to present, disseminate and discuss the way forward to enhance the role of the police leaders and managers as key players to sustainable security. It was organised in the context of the obligation, roles and responsibilities of the Gambia Police Force in protecting life and property and ensuring the observance of the rule of law.

In his keynote address, the minister of Interior, Seyaka Sonko assured of Government’s determination to continue to support the Gambia Police Force to ensure competent policing that would provide better services to the citizenry. 

Abdoulie Sanyang, Inspector General of Police, said that as leaders of policing, they bear the responsibility of ensuring the safety and well-being of the communities, and that their role extends beyond traditional law enforcement to encompassing community engagement, problem –solving, and the cultivation of trust and confidence. He said the conference provides them with a unique opportunity to share insights, exchange best practices, and collectively address the challenges that confront them in the ever-evolving landscape of public safety.

“In the face of increasing complexities and dynamic threats, effective police leadership is paramount, our ability to adopt to change, embrace technology, and foster collaboration will determine our success in fulfilling our duty to protect and serve,” he further stated.

Momodou Sowe, Deputy Inspector General of Police affirmed that one key objective of the forum is to unite the police and other services in the country. “The Gambia Police Force is one indivisible entity, and there is only one Inspector General of Police in the entire Gambia Police Force; meaning it is an independent institution. Let us remind ourselves of our responsibilities so that society continues; if we fail society fails,” Deputy IGP Sowe remarked.
