The Ministry of Health through the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), has announced the official launch of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). The launch marks a monumental step towards its mission to provide accessible and affordable healthcare for all citizens by signing contracts with 10 selected health facilities across the seven Health Regions.
These esteemed facilities include EFSTH, Kanifing General Hospital, Bundung Maternal and Child Health Hospital, Brikama District Hospital, Bwiam General Hospital, Soma District Hospital, Bansang General Hospital, Basse District Hospital, Kuntair Major Health Centre, and Farafenni General Hospital.
The Chief Executive Officer of NHIA, Bai Mass Saine, underscored the importance of the National Health Insurence Scheme, saying the launch of the Health Insurance Scheme will mark a crucial moment in the country’s healthcare landscape.
“I am deeply proud to witness this significant step towards ensuring universal access to quality healthcare for all citizens”, he remarked. The NHIS roll-out, he added, does not only signify their commitment to addressing the healthcare needs of the population but also represents a fundamental shift towards a more equitable and inclusive healthcare system.
The Director of Health Services, Dr Hassan Njie, said the initiative underscores their dedication to leaving no one behind; that it as well serves as a beacon of hope for a healthier, more resilient society.
The Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Health, Dr Omar Jah, also affirmed that the launch signifies a huge step towards the ministry’s mission of providing accessible and affordable healthcare for all citizens.
The inauguration and contract signing ceremony for the NHIS roll-out signifies a milestone in the Health ministry’s relentless pursuit to ensuring that every individual in the country has access to quality healthcare services.
To partake in the NHIS roll-out under the contract agreement, individuals must meet specific eligibility criteria, including pregnant women admitted to the labour ward for delivery, registered newborns (up to 7 days for normal delivery and 10 days for cesarean delivery), and post-partum mothers (up to 7 days for normal delivery and 10 days for cesarean delivery).
