The Minister of Higher Education Research Science and Technology (MoHERST) has promised the Media Academy for Journalism and Communication (MAJaC) that his Ministry will support some students who are facing financial challenges to study at the institution with scholarships. This was during his familiarisation visit at the institute on Wednesday, 22nd June, 2022.
The visit afforded the Hon. Minister the opportunity to familiarise himself with the activities and operations of MAJaC and to gain first-hand information on their challenges. After discovering that some students are finding it hard to complete their studies due to financial constraints, the Minister assured the support of his ministry in resolving that challenge.
“We have a country to build and the media should not be left behind. There will never be any sustainable development if the media is sidelined; if the media is not well equipped, not well trained. They need to be supported” he said. He affirmed that every year some MAJaC students will be provided scholarships by MoHERST.
The Minister went on to urge students to be entrepreneurially minded. “Given your exposure to practical work, you are capable of being independent and be job creators instead of only job seekers”.
According to Isatou Keita, a journalism trainer at MAJaC, a lot of effort is put in the school curriculum to ensure the quality of students produced. Hon. Prof. Gomez was pleased to discover that practical work forms a key component in the learning curriculum of MAJaC.
