Banjul,14 August 2026: President Adama Barrow has approved the construction of a new road network linking Faraba and neighbouring communities in Kombo East, a move expected to improve transportation, expand access to markets and schools and unlock the agricultural potential of the area.
The President made the announcement when he received a delegation from Faraba, who visited to express appreciation for development projects delivered in the community since his government came to power in 2017.
Among the projects highlighted by the delegation were the main campus of the University of The Gambia, electrification, agricultural support including tractors and fertiliser and scholarships for students from Faraba.
The new road network will complement the ongoing construction of the Narang Road and is expected to improve access to Faraba’s rice fields while easing the movement of women farmers transporting produce to markets. It will also improve access to schools and other essential services for surrounding communities.
Receiving the delegation, President Barrow said the new road formed part of his government’s commitment to expanding infrastructure and promoting inclusive development across the country.
He described himself as “a man of his word”, saying the infrastructural developments undertaken since 2017 demonstrated his determination to improve the lives and livelihoods of Gambians.
The President assured the delegation that his administration would continue to pursue inclusive development beyond 2026 and called for a peaceful election year.
The meeting also touched on the country’s current electricity supply challenges. President Barrow explained that The Gambia’s power difficulties were partly linked to wider regional constraints within the West African Power Pool, noting that neighbouring countries are experiencing similar challenges.
He called for patience and continued regional cooperation as efforts continue to stabilise electricity supply.
The speakers pledged their continued loyalty and support to the President, describing the audience as an honour for the Faraba community.
The approval of the road network is expected to further connect Faraba and neighbouring communities while supporting agriculture, education, trade and local economic activity in Kombo East.
The delegation, which included Chief of Kombo East Babukarr Sanyang, Essa Dampha, Pa Kalipha Sanyang, Pa Jung Conteh, Sambou Daffeh, Kemo Jatta and Mariama Jarju, expressed their appreciation to President Barrow for meeting them during his annual leave.
