Banjul, 28th April 2025: His Excellency President Adama Barrow and delegation on Friday, 25th April, attended the inauguration of the OMVG substation at Antula in the Republic of Guinea Bissau. The Antula substation is part of the sub-regional project to provide interstate electricity supply in The Gambia, Senegal, Guinea, and Guinea Bissau.
In 2020 The Gambia inaugurated the Soma substation, which improved electricity access in the country. The launch of the Bissau substation is a move towards creating a more reliable access to electricity, key in the industrial and economic development of the sub-region.
Speaking to the press after his return from the day’s trip to Bissau, President Adama Barrow paid tribute to the wisdom of the founding fathers who designed the OMVG project. He expressed gratitude that the children of the pioneers are reaping the benefit of their wisdom.
On the significance of the project the President said the four beneficiary countries cannot develop without electricity; thus called for concerted efforts to combine resources for the successful implementation of the project.
“This project is very important because now you can transmit electricity from Guinea, Guinea Bissau, and Senegal to The Gambia. This is a big achievement for all of us,” he remarked.
He said the attendance of the leaders of the four member countries demonstrates solidarity and collective support.
He explained that the project is implemented in phases, and expressed hope that once the project is successfully implemented it will ensure affordability and reliability of electricity supply in the sub-region.
