He reiterated the government’s unwavering dedication to press freedom and affirmed that it is not just a privilege, but a sacred right that requires protection and nurturing.
‘‘The government’s role in enhancing press freedom is multifaceted,’’ he went on. ‘‘It requires the enactment of robust legal frameworks that safeguard the rights of journalists, promote media plurality, and ensure access to information. It necessitates fostering a culture of openness, transparency, and accountability within government institutions. It demands cultivating a conducive environment where journalists can work without fear of intimidation or prosecution.’’
Minister Ceesay concluded by saying the journey towards press freedom in The Gambia may have been troubled with challenges, but with unwavering determination and collective action, a new chapter has unfolded—one where the pen proves mightier than the sword.
