Bonded by similar cultures, traditions and beliefs, The Gambia and Senegal continue to support and elevate each other in times of need. The two countries, despite their minor differences have been coexisting in peace that roots from the time of independence.
From getting security backups to exchanges in trade, the two countries maintain a cordial relationship even with change of governments.
When it comes to arts and culture, Gambia and Senegal are one and the same. Every end of year, Gambia looks forward to receiving Senegalese musicians for the purpose of entertainment which in turn provides revenue for both countries.
Considering the high presence of famous Senegalese musicians in The Gambia during festive periods, establishing an annual cultural festival to promote exchanges between the two countries will further strengthen this bond.
With the cultural similarities, the exchange would not only enhance the two countries’ cultural identities, but also, it would be an avenue to revive, promote and learn about cultures that have died out with age.
The exchange will also bring about opportunity for young and upcoming artistes to learn from those that have excelled in their careers.
Moreover, where other means fall short, culture can be an effective and efficient avenue for mending diplomatic relationships through cultural diplomacy. This becomes even instrumental in an instance where the actors and parties involved share virtually the same heritage like The Gambia and Senegal. Like the Senegalese Culture minister posited, culture can be a source of inspiration to promote unity and development.
We therefore call on the peoples of Gambia and Senegal to strengthen our bond through culture and arts.
