The Minister of State of the Federal Republic of Germany, Ms Katja Keul told the press after meeting the Gambian leader that she was in the country to intensify cooperation and strengthening bilateral ties between the two countries, especially in the areas of transitional justice and security sector reforms. Her visit followed the opening of a German embassy in the country for the country for the first time.
She disclosed that her discussion with the President on transitional justice programme specifically touched on victims’ support and reparations to promote reconciliation, as well as efforts to prepare for a hybrid court for the justice process, which is ongoing with the recent launching of the TRRC Implementation plan and donor conference geared towards accomplishing justice for the victims.
The German Minister of State underscored that The Gambia and German have so many features in common as both countries experienced dictatorship in the past and then transitioned to democracy. “We know all the steps that The Gambia is going through and we really want to support,” she asserted.
She went on: The African women leaders’ network chapter has been launched in The Gambia now. Women are key players in the transitional justice processes”.
Ms Katja Keul was accompanied to State House by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Honourable MamadouTangara.
