VP Jallow Leads Energy Task Force Inspection of NAWEC Facilities

Banjul,15 September 2026: Vice President Mohammed B.S. Jallow, chair of the National Task Force established to address The Gambia’s ongoing energy crisis, on Saturday led a high-level government delegation on an inspection tour of two critical NAWEC facilities.
The delegation visited the Jabang 225kVA transmission sub-station and the Bijilo sub-station as part of efforts to assess the country’s electricity situation and identify measures to address the current crisis.
The team included Cabinet ministers, the Secretary to Cabinet and Head of the Civil Service, as well as Permanent Secretaries from various government sectors. The task force was established by President Adama Barrow to urgently assess the energy situation and recommend immediate and sustainable solutions.
Members of the task force have been meeting almost daily since the crisis began.
Speaking to journalists after the inspection, Vice President Jallow said the site visit was a continuation of the task force’s ongoing work.
He explained that the delegation first visited Jabang, which serves as the point through which The Gambia receives imported electricity, before proceeding to Bijilo, where an electricity access improvement project is being implemented with funding provided within the framework of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
According to the Vice President, the task force is pursuing solutions on three fronts: immediate measures to restore reliable electricity supply and rebuild public confidence, a medium-term plan to strengthen the sector and a long-term strategy aimed at ensuring a sustainable energy system.
He said Gambians should expect progress on these measures before October.
Vice President Jallow also appealed to the public to remain calm and patient as the government works to resolve the crisis. He particularly urged traditional, political and religious leaders to support the task force’s efforts and speak out against attacks on government infrastructure.
He described the protection of critical national infrastructure as essential to the country’s recovery from the current energy crisis.
The inspection underscores the government’s ongoing efforts, under the leadership of President Barrow, to address the electricity crisis through coordinated and technically informed interventions.
