The Science and Technology Education Directorate (STED) under the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education (MoBSE), in collaboration with GAMBEGA LTD and Gambia Radio and Television Services (GRTS) on Thursday, 25th April held a grand award ceremony for the winners of the Fanta Science& Mathematics National Quiz and the launching of the 12th edition for the academic year 2024/ 2025.
Held at the St Peter’s Senior Secondary School Hall in Lamin, the event was saw the four winning schools: St Peter’s emerged champions, followed by Charles Jow Memorial Academy, Armitage SSS and Kaur SSS awarded.
In the same vein, certificates were presented to officials, partners, and participants.
Speaking at the event on behalf of the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Musa Bah, Principal Education Officer (PEO) at the Human Resource Directorate of MOBSE, said the competition has been instrumental in fostering a culture of scientific inquiry and critical thinking among the youth.“It has provided a platform for young minds to explore, learn and innovate and I have no doubt the knowledge and experience gained from this competition will serve as a strong foundation for your future endeavours”, PEO Bah stated.
Mr Antonio Cuerva Martinez, Business Development Manager at GAMBEGA LTD, said GAMBEGA believes in nurturing and supporting young scientists, engineers, and innovators. He described science and mathematics subjects as the bedrock upon which future progress and prosperity are built.
“These subjects empower us to understand the world around us, to solve complex problems, and to drive innovation in every sector of our community”, he asserted.
Representing the Director of Region 2 West, Mr. Buba Manneh, Principal Education Officer, underscored the significance of participating in school competitions to prepare one for future endeavours and to become formidable experts in various aspects of life.
Dr Abdou L J Jammeh, representing the Director of STED, highlighted the significance of STEM as an integrated approach to teaching and learning science, technology, engineering and mathematics which promote the learning of the 21st century skills.
“If Africa is going to realise its green transformation, it will be through a significant increase of the number of quality of scientists, researchers and engineers who will drive the required innovation and creativity on the continent,” Dr Jammeh echoed.
Mr. Ebrima Saidy, the Coordinator of the Fanta Science/ Math Quiz, posited that science and mathematics are indispensable in education due to their multifaceted significance in promoting innovation, technological advancement, and global competitiveness
The Vice Principal of St Peter’s Senior Secondary School, Mr. Michael M. Mendy, said the quiz offers immense benefits and educational opportunities to students both within and outside of school system.
Other speakers include Pa Samba Baldeh, Head of National Office, WAEC Banjul whilst Mr Babou Joof, quiz moderator of the Fanta Science/ Math competition made the final balloting of participating schools for the upcoming edition.
Ismaila Fatty, student participant from St Peter’s Senior Secondary, gave the vote of thanks.
