Banjul, 15 May 2025: The Gambia’s Young Queens are set for a demanding start to their WAFU-A campaign as they lock horns with reigning champions Senegal in their opening fixture, scheduled for 24 September.
Head coach Joseph Jabang has named a strong and competitive starting XI, underlining the team’s intent to compete aggressively and make an early statement in the regional competition.
The encounter is widely expected to be a high-intensity affair, with Senegal arriving as defending champions boasting experience, physicality, and a well-drilled winning pedigree. However, the Young Queens head into the tie with belief, buoyed by disciplined preparations and growing confidence within the squad.
Coach Jabang’s side has focused on tactical organisation, defensive solidity, and quick transitions in training sessions leading up to the match. The technical team has emphasised the importance of concentration, game management, and taking early chances in what is expected to be a tightly contested fixture.
A positive result against Senegal would not only provide a major confidence boost but also set a strong foundation for The Gambia’s progression in the tournament.
The Young Queens are expected to draw strong support as they step onto the pitch, carrying national expectations and the ambition to challenge the region’s elite.
With the countdown underway, all eyes will be on whether the Gambian side can rise to the occasion and begin their WAFU-A journey with a statement performance against the champions.
