The humanitarian impact of the July 30th -31st flash floods in The Gambia is still being addressed by various sectors in the country. Approximately 47,000 people across the country are affected. It is with this regard that the Government of The Gambia through the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) called on international bodies, stakeholders and philanthropists to participate in the response process.
The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) Gambia has decided to support an unconditional cash-based transfer of D300,000 to be distributed among 60 households in West Coast Region with each household receiving D5000.
Speaking at the occasion, the Country Director ADRA-Gambia Emmanuel Tatteh noted that, the move is designed to enhance and strengthen the community’s quest in supporting disaster victims in The Gambia.
“We are joining hands with other stakeholders to complement government’s efforts in disaster risk reduction, while supporting vulnerable victims,’’ he stated.
The Regional Disaster Coordinator West Coast Region, Binta Sey Jadama, commended ADRA for the gesture. She noted that over the years, ADRA has been supportive to disaster victims by providing emergency relieve support. She however called on other stakeholders and philanthropists to come on board and support the victims.
Beneficiary Musa Bah expressed delight for ADRA’s timely intervention while urging other philanthropists to come to their aid.
The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA International) is a non-governmental organization established in The Gambia in 1980 by the Seventh-day Adventist Church from the USA. The humanitarian charity are primarily engaged in poverty relieve programmes such as initiatives to enhance food security, basic health, primary and secondary education. They also have in place a preparedness programme to aid victims of natural disasters.
