Dr Monique Nsanzabaganwa, African Union (AU) Deputy Chairperson on Friday, 21st October paid a courtesy call on His Excellency President Adama Barrow at State House in Banjul.
After her audience with the Gambian leader Dr. Monique Nsanzabaganwa told journalists that she is here under the mandate of Africa Union commission for the opening of African Commission on Human and People’s Rights and the celebration of 35 years of existence.
She said on Thursday 20th October 2022, she witnessed the laying of the foundation stone of the headquarters of African Union Commission on Human and People’s Rights which The Gambia is hosting.
She commended The Gambia for its efforts in protecting and defending human rights for more than forty years. “We are also proud of the President for his achievement; coming this far in transitional justice since 2017, which stands as a hope and a model on the continent and beyond”.
Further on the aim of the visit, Dr. Monique Nsanzabaganwa they are here to seek guidance and support from African Union leaders.
“We seek guidance from the President on how to go about in this journey, on the path of sustainability as we have political independence but still lack financial independence,” she remarked.
She went on: “The President has confirmed his government’s commitment to mobilising the necessary resources to deliver on the construction of the permanent headquarters of AU Human Rights Commission, and this is welcoming. We are ready to work with all stakeholders in this project”.
