Editorial: The National Call to Clean the Nation

The National Cleansing Exercise commonly known as “Set Setal’’ was one of the most participated nationwide communal activities that did not only help to keep the country clean, but also served as a means of bringing people together in communities. It was the most effective method of combating littering.

Despite some challenges especially when it came to waste disposal, its general effectiveness is undeniable; such that in the long period of its discontinuity the impact is felt all around.  Certain neighborhoods and streets are littered so much that it has become a breeding space for mosquitoes, and an eyesore.

Therefore, government’s bold move to revitalize the clean-up initiative is indeed commendable. It will surely keep the country clean and healthy and enhance its aesthetic beauty.

It is noteworthy that one of the shortcomings of the cleaning exercise as it were was the fact that it was left in the hands of few. This had thereby almost defeated the purpose of the cause. We therefore urge citizens to participate in it en mass and take it as a pride and a duty as patriotic citizens.

Also, since the activity takes place on Saturdays, everyone should be able to take a few hours from their time to clean their neighborhoods and surroundings so as to start living in clean environments.

Moreover, since the communal monthly event is a voluntary exercise, it should be complemented by the enforcement of the Anti-littering Act and regulation. For instance, the enforcement of the ban on plastic use and sale would result to less health hazards for both people and animal, while indiscriminate dumping would be a thing of the past if offenders start paying the requisite fines.

Unless people are made accountable for their actions these policies and national initiatives would be meaningless. The authorities are hence urged to implement the Act to the letter and encouraging a behavioural change through such voluntary ‘tesito’ initiatives as ‘the Set setal’.
