The Vice President, His Excellency Mohamed BS Jallow, representing President Barrow, presented a cheque for one million Dalasis to Gambian sprint queen, Mariam (Gina) Bass Bittaye in recognition of her outstanding performance at the recently concluded All African Games in Ghana.
The substantial gift is courtesy of the Government of The Gambia through the Ministry of Youth and Sports to honour Gina Mariam Bass Bittaye’s outstanding gold medal triumphs in both the 100m and 200m events at the African Games.
Vice President Jallowa pplauded Gina’s historic win, citing her as the first Gambian athlete to secure a senior continental title.
He also expressed gratitude to the Relay Team for breaking national records and commended the efforts of all athletes in various disciplines.
For his part, Minister of Youth and Sports, Hon. Bakary Y Badjie emphasised the significance of Gina’s accomplishments, dominating both the 100m and 200m events, from heats to finals.
“Gina has not only represented her name in Gambian sports history, but has also, she has become a source of inspiration for the entire nation through her unwavering determination and passion”. Badjie stated.
He went on to assert that Gina’s journey to victory has been nothing short of remarkable; from setting a new national record in the 2019 women’s 100m event to securing an unexpected triumph in the 200m finals against the favored competitor. He added that the acclaimed athlete’s story epitomises the power of perseverance and self-belief.
“As we celebrate Gina’s success, we also celebrate the boundless potential of The Gambia on the global sports stage,” he further remarked.
The Ministry of Youth and Sports, in collaboration with the Gambia Athletics Association (GAA) and the Gambia National Olympic Committee (GNOC), affirms that it remains steadfast in nurturing talents like Gina’s and ensuring that our nation continues to shine brightly in the world of sports.
