Gambia’s triumph in African beach volleyball in recent years emphasizes the importance of perseverance, patience, humility, and trust in local coaches.
Since the FIVB beach volleyball world championship debuted in 1997, this is the first time, Gambia, a West African country of about 2.2 million inhabitants, will have a taste at the tournament.
The Gambia men beach volleyball team left the country on Wednesday 8th June to Rome for the global championship. The team pitted against host Italy, Argentina and Brazil in pool A.
The team lost their first game on Friday the 10th against the host Italy 2-0 and also lost the 2nd game against world champions Brazil 2-0.
The team will play its final pool match on Monday against Argentina.
The defeat seems Gambia have crashed out from the tournament. Even win today, Monday wouldn’t salvage the West Africans.
Whatever happens in Rome, The Gambia beach volleyball team will be remembered as the first team sport to be featured in a world championship. And the team duo of Sainey Jawo and Mbye Jarra will be inducted into the volleyball hall of fame.
