Representing the Minister of Trade, Industry and Employment at the recently held World Cooperation Industries Forum in Turkiye, the Minister of Information, Lamin Queen Jammeh delivered a statement in which he affirmed Gambia’s recognition of industrialization’s immense potential as a catalyst for socio-economic transformation and poverty reduction.
The Objective of the forum was to bring together manufacturers, importers and exporters from around Africa, to collaborate and be exposed to a wide range of products produced in Turkiye, as well as different technologies.
The Minister said the World Cooperation Industries Forum gives the opportunity to discuss the transformative power of cooperation in driving our industrial development agenda, particularly in the context of The Gambia.
“As the Minister of Industry of The Gambia, I am keenly aware of the pivotal role that industries play in driving economic growth, creating jobs, and advancing sustainable development,” Minister Jammeh quoted Joof.
He however acknowledged the challenges that developing countries like The Gambia face, including limited resources, infrastructure gaps, and the need for skilled labour.
“In this light, the theme of this forum resonates deeply with our aspirations and priorities. Cooperation, both at the national and international levels, is essential for overcoming these challenges and unlocking the full potential of our industrial sectors. It is through collaboration that we can leverage our strengths, share knowledge and best practices, and create synergies that drive innovation and competitiveness,” he stated.
He went on: “As we continue to recognise the pivotal role of the private sector in national development and the need to create the enabling environment to tap their potential, Governments will continue to engage in reforms to enhance their competitiveness. Governments should continue to prioritise support to the MSMEs who play a crucial role in the social and economic development of our countries, in terms of employment creation for the masses, and income generation as an avenue for wealth creation”.
Minister Jammeh expressed optimism that the occasion would empower businesses and help address the issues such as access to international markets, as local firms will have the capacity to connect to international businesses with firm grip on international distribution channels. “History has shown that sustained economic growth and development are achieved by those countries that are able to effectively transform their productive activities from low to high productivity, and diversify their production and exports,” he added.
He thanked the organisers, as well as the sponsors for their excellent work, which he said made the forum possible. “A lot of efforts must have gone into organising this forum, which is only possible through sacrifice and dedication to duties. In addition, I would like to urge all participants to network and build strong connections with Turkish companies to grow together,” he concluded.
