The Minister of Interior, Mr. Abdoulie Sanyang, recently inspected key construction sites of The Gambia Immigration Department (GID) infrastructure projects. The sites he visited included Giboro, Amdalie and Farafenni border posts. These visits, supported by International Organisation for Migration (IOM) The Gambia, allowed the Minister to monitor the ongoing work on these critical infrastructural projects designed to fortify The Gambia’s border management system. Hon. Sanyang reviewed the progress at the sites and facilities, including the development of the planned “withholding centres”, which are designed to temporarily hold individuals awaiting further processing. The inclusion of withholding centres is crucial for handling sensitive cases securely and humanely, aligning with The Gambia’s commitment to upholding human rights in migration management.

In his remarks, the Honourable Minister expressed appreciation to the various border services stationed at Giboro, Amdalie, and Farafenni for the warm welcome extended to him and his team. He commended the officers for their dedication and professionalism, acknowledging the vital role they play in maintaining security and orderly migration. Hon. Sanyang urged the contractors to expedite their efforts to meet the revised completion deadline. His call to action underlined the importance of completing these facilities promptly to support The Gambia’s broader border management goals.

Minister Sanyang highlighted that these projects represent a major step forward in The Gambia’s Integrated Border Management (IBM) strategy. He emphasised the importance of consolidating multiple functions into a single facility, which he said would enhance coordination among various agencies, thus optimising both security and efficiency in migration processes. He divulged that the new border posts will be equiped with cutting-edge border control and surveillance systems which he said will ensure comprehensive coverage and enhanced security at these key entry points. Hon. Sanyang recognised IOM’s support saying that it has been instrumental in introducing advanced technology and infrastructure, aligning The Gambia’s border management with international standards.

“Once operational, these upgraded border posts will positively impact surrounding communities by facilitating secure, efficient trade and fostering regional economic cooperation. Enhanced security will also promote community safety, which is essential for social and economic growth,” he said. Hon. Sanyang praised the collaborative efforts of the IOM team, the contractors, and consultants in advancing this national priority project and reiterated his confidence that the upgraded border facilities will substantially improve The Gambia’s ability to secure its borders while ensuring orderly migration. The Minister was accompanied by Mr. Kebba Nfally Darbo, a senior official from the Ministry of Interior, IOM staff, the project contractors and consultants.
