With the country track record of women leadership in homes, communities, organisations and even at the state level, one would imagine The Gambia to have a platform where these women are celebrated and their efforts recognised.
Inspired by the fact that there had not been a single platform that celebrated Gambian women achievements at grand scale, Ms. Awa Gai, a young Gambian woman, created the She Awards Gambia aimed at recognising the efforts of women as well as inspire young girls.
In this interview, the creator of She Awards Gambia said the idea was conceived in 2019 with the aim of bringing to light the wins of Gambia women, especially the ones that have not been captured in the country history.
She said Gambia has produced outstanding women from various sectors impacting society, but it has not been shown that these women are celebrated in the country to encourage them to do more and to excel in their different fields.
That is how She Awards Gambia came about - to provide a platform that will recognise outstanding Gambian women, just like it is done for women in other countries she butressed.
Ms. Gai stated that the event contributes to impacting the lives of Gambian women as they strive for inclusivity as well as use their platform to inspire both women and girls in The Gambia and beyond.
Started in 2019, She Awards Gambia has had two editions, where a number of Gambian women were awarded in different categories.
Ms. Gai informed that plans are on the way for the 3rd edition, and all updates can be seen in their social media platforms @SheAwardsGambia. She noted that they have announced the categories for this year and nominations are open.
