Banjul, 14th April 2025: His Excellency President Adama Barrow on Friday, 11th April 2025 received the executive members of the National Muslim Elders Advisory Council at State House in Banjul.
The National Muslim Elders Advisory Council was established in 2023. There are 17 executive members and over 80 executive members across the country. All the regions in the country are represented in the executive.
President Adama Barrow said he has high hopes and confidence because of the caliber elderly people he saw. “I will assure the advisory council that I will work with you. I need more prayers from you; both for the country and for myself,” he remarked. He thanked the Imams and all the advisory council members for their efforts and commitment.
Imam Modou Lamin Touray, President of the National Muslim Elders Advisory Council acknowledged that the President had said it many times that his doors are open to everyone.
He said the Friday meeting at State House was meant to be an inception meeting to formally introduce the council to the President and to create public awareness about the council.
He said the body aims to complement national efforts, especially in the maintenance of peace.
Imam Touray informed that the council will join with other Muslim groups in the country such as the Supreme Islamic Council to support the President’s the efforts. “The council will advise the President on issues, strengthen the relationship among the Majlis, Madarass, other religious groups, and schools, as well as support widows, orphans and the needy, and resolve disputes. Orphans and widows should have a safe place where they can go and put their case and get help”.
The Muslim elders’ president revealed that the Muslim body had distributed sugar and rice in the country with the support of the President.
“We assure the President that we will support him; especially on the aspect of religion, humanity and national development,” he pledged.
Other speakers also thanked the President and assured him of their commitment to supporting his agenda and maintaining peace and stability in the country.
