New GAF Council Members Sworn-in

The President of The Republic of The Gambia and Commander in Chief of The Gambia Armed Forces, on Friday, 16th September 2022 presided over the swearing-in ceremony of members of The Gambia Armed Forces Council at State House in Banjul.

In accordance with the 1997 constitution, the president has appointed the Vice President, His Excellency Badera Alieu Joof as Chairman of the Armed Forces Council. Members of the Council are as follows:  Minister of Defense, Sering Modou Njie, Lieutenant General Yankuba Drammeh Chief of Defense Staff of The Gambia Armed Forces, Major General Mamour Cham Deputy Chief of Defense Staff of The Gambia Armed Forces, Brigadier General Toru Jawaneh Commander of Republican National Guard, Mrs. Rohey Bittaye Darboe Permanent Secretary Ministry of Defense and Retire Lieutenant general Abdoulie Conteh.

Vice president and Chairman of the Armed Forces Council mentioned that the president expects council members to come up with strong policies and programs which will make the armed forces more professional, effective and efficient.

VP Joof further highlight that members of the council will work towards supporting and  enhancing human capacity of the armed forces including  the engineering, medicine, and nursing section so as to not  only defend the territorial integrity of The Gambia, but also contribute to the socio-economic development as well.

Moreover, he said the forces have engage in productive activities such as agriculture, engineering, health and education for the development of The Gambia

Minister of Defense, Honorable Modou Njie expressed gratitude and thanked the president for setting up the Armed Forces Council. He went on to explain that this is meant to improve the governance system of The Gambia Armed Forces.

Minister Njie further highlighted that weak security governance and system can be a threat to the security of the country and promised that the council will work up to expectations

He thanked members of the Armed Forces Council, especially the civil members for accepting the task. 

The swearing-in ceremony was attended by Honorable Lamin Queen Jammeh Minister of Information, Honourable Dawda Jallow Attorney General and Minister of Justice and Honorable Siaka Sonko Minister of Interior.
