The National Youth Council (NYC), under the Ministry of Youth and Sports, is currently conducting a trainers’ training for facilitators, as part of the Safe Space and HeForShe initiative. Supported by UNFPA The Gambia through the GAM SWEDD+ project, the training aims to build the capacity of community leaders. It will equip participants with the skills and knowledge needed to lead community-based efforts through Safe Spaces and HeForShe clubs, fostering gender-responsive communities and encouraging both women and men to challenge social norms that hinder equality.
During the event, Ndey Rose Sarr, the UNFPA Country Representative, highlighted the significance of the training, emphasising its role in creating safe spaces and advancing gender equality. She noted the importance of empowering facilitators to address issues that affect women and girls, fostering an environment where they can thrive.
Alieu K. Bah, the World Bank Representative for the SWEDD+ project, also addressed the gathering, stressing the need for continued investment in initiatives that support women and girls. He underscored the project’s commitment to improving access to reproductive health services, education, and economic opportunities, as well as its role in promoting sustainable development across the Sahel region.
The SWEDD+ project (Sahel Women’s Empowerment and Demographic Dividend) is a regional initiative supported by the World Bank, focused on empowering women and girls in the Sahel region. It aims to provide better access to reproductive health, education, and economic resources, enabling women and girls to make informed choices that improve their well-being, reduce gender inequalities, and contribute to sustainable economic growth. The project also tackles harmful practices such as child marriage and female genital mutilation (FGM), and promoting gender equality in various sectors.
Safe Spaces provides mentorship, support, and education on sexual and reproductive health, rights, and life skills for women and girls, while HeForShe Clubs engage men and boys as allies in promoting gender equality and combating gender-based violence.
