While presiding over the 15th passing-out and swearing-in ceremony of the National Youth Service Scheme (NYSS), the Vice President of the Republic Mohammad BS Jallow underscore as imperative youth empowerment and inclusivity.
This year’s intake amounts to 200 corps members, including: five former inmates, five individuals with hearing impairments, and five migrant returnees, reflecting Government’s commitment to integrating marginalised groups into national development process.
Following a one-month orientation, these members will engage in a two-year Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programme, designed to equip them with skills and discipline for meaningful societal contributions.
Further in his speech, the Vice President recognised that the occasion marked the first instance under the current government where 200 young people have been recruited simultaneously into the NYSS skills acquisition programme. “The initiative demonstrates our government’s commitment to developing the potential of Gambian youth,” he said.
He emphasised that with over 70% of the population under 35, The Gambia recognises the immense potential of its youth in driving socioeconomic progress. “The Government has implemented various programmes aimed at providing opportunities for skills development, recognising the critical role young people play in national development. The youth are the backbone of any nation. We are committed to equipping them with the necessary skills for meaningful employment,” he asserted.
VP Jallow expressed hope that the programme would expand to include more young people through collaboration with TVET institutions and other stakeholders. He encouraged other agencies to partner with the Ministry of Youth and Sports to support the NYSS orientation and training programmes, which particularly target young graduates from senior secondary schools.
Honorable Bakary Y. Badjie encouraged the recruits to foster collaboration and reduce reliance on foreign expertise. Meanwhile, NYSS Executive Director Abass Bah highlighted the programme’s role in providing equal opportunities, offering a new start for those with disabilities and former inmates.
The event, held at the Independence Stadium grounds, saw the presentation of TV sets and cash prizes to deserving corps members.
