is Excellency President Adama Barrow has admonished Gambians, in particular political opponents to unite for the interest of the country. He addressed the nation on Sunday, May 21st, a day after the mayoral and chairperson elections, an exercise that marked the closure of the country’s electoral cycle until 2026.
The President congratulated the winners, encouraged them to deliver to expectation and commended the losers for the courage and temerity to contest. He equally commended Gambians for the peaceful outcome of the election, attributing it to the maturity of our democracy.
The final official results by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) indicated that out of the eight administrative regions and municipalities
United Democratic Party (UDP) won gained four seats – in Banjul, Kanifing Municipality, Brikama and Mansakonko administrative areas with a total of 209, 465 votes. The ruling National People’s Party (NPP) equally polled 4 seats - in Basse, Janjanbureh, Kuntaur and Kerewan administrative areas, with a total of 194, 247 votes.
Other contesting parties were People’s Progressive Party (one) candidate with 2, 023 votes, People’s Democratic Organisation for Independence and Socialism (one )3, 796 votes; Gambia Democratic Congress (one) with 2, 614 votes;
Gambia For All (one) with 1, 227 votes; while Independent Candidates polled a total of 44,974 votes.
