The Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change & Natural Resources (MECCNAR) has stressed the importance of sustainability in mitigating the effects of climate change. He highlighted the vital role that sustainable practices play in climate change mitigation by implementing eco-friendly agricultural techniques; such as organic farming methods and water-efficient irrigation systems, to minimise environmental impact and maximize resource efficiency.
Mr. Babucarr Zaidi Jallow was recently speaking during the handing over of a vegetable garden, an initiative exclusively meant to support women in the wake of the adverse effects of climate change, eliciting expressions of delight and gratitude from the beneficiaries.
The event marked a significant step towards gender equality and economic empowerment in the community of Bati Njol in Central River Region (CRR), as the women gathered to receive the responsibility of managing the vegetable garden, their excitement brimming everywhere.
Many expressed joy at the opportunity to actively participate in agricultural activities, traditionally dominated by men. For them, this initiative represented more than just a garden; it symbolised a newfound sense of independence.
The Adviser to the Minister, Mr Bubu Pateh Jallow, emphasised the significance of community involvement and ownership in promoting sustainability.
He encouraged active participation from all members of the community in the maintenance and management of the vegetable garden, emphasising the collective responsibility to preserve and protect the environment for future generations.
For the Bati Njol Community, handing over the vegetable garden to women signifies a commitment to promoting gender inclusivity and empowering marginalised groups. By recognising the valuable contributions of women in agriculture and providing them with resources and support, the community is paving the way for sustainable development and social progress.
Amidst smiles and words of gratitude, the women conveyed their appreciation for the trust and support extended to them. They recognised the significance of the vegetable garden not only in providing nutritious food for their families but also in generating income and fostering self-reliance.
