Ministry of Youth and Sports, through the National Sports Council, on Friday, May 10th announced the allocation of two million Dalasis (D2,000,000) to support the Gambia under-20 (U20) handball national team as they prepare for an international tournament in Mauritania. The ceremony, held at the Independence Stadium in Bakau, marked a significant moment for the country’s sports community as the U20 team gears up to compete from May 13th to May 20th, 2024.
In his address, Honourable Minister Badjie emphasised the government’s dedication to fostering sports talent in The Gambia. He encouraged the U20 handball players to demonstrate discipline and determination as they represent their nation on the international stage. Minister Badjie’s words highlighted the broader importance of sports in cultivating national pride and unity.
Mr. Lamin King Colley, President of the Handball Association of the Gambia, also expressed his appreciation to the Ministry for its continued support. He noted the progress the association has made under his leadership, focusing on promoting the sport and providing substantial resources for the players. Each player will received an allowance of D15,000 and specialised Terra shoes, reflecting the association’s commitment to player development.
“I am dedicated to setting a high standard of excellence within the Handball Association,” Colley stated. “Our young players have the potential to make The Gambia proud, and I believe they will excel in Mauritania.” His remarks underscored the association’s dedication to ensuring the U20 team’s success at the upcoming tournament.
The Ministry’s financial support demonstrates its proactive approach to encouraging sports at the grassroots level. As the Gambia U20 handball team prepares for their international challenge, they carry with them the hopes of a nation.
