The Ministry of Transport, Works and Infrastructure (MoWI) in collaboration with key stakeholders in the implementation of the twenty 50-km OIC roads project recently conducted a sensitisation session with the affected families in New Jeshwang, as road construction is about to commence in the area.
The event, which was held at the Jeshwang Health Centre, was meant to initiate a comprehensible discussion on key issues and questions; such as when will the demolition of structures on the right hand side of the way be carried out, as well as when will the much-anticipated compensation payment be rolled-out.
Speaking at the event, Essa Bokarr Sey, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, OIC-The Gambia, commended the affected families for their understanding and collaboration throughout the process.
He assured them that they would be compensated by the government as promised.
Sheriff Sarr, the National Assembly for Jeshwang constituency, thanked the affected families for demonstrating maturity and respect to the authorities during the meeting. Honourable Sarr called on the contractor to speed- up work as the rainy, season is fast approaching.
Kebba Trawally, Project Manager, at the National Roads Authority, stated that the road when completed will be a standard one with all the necessary road safety measures in place.
He also called on the affected families to be patient as the project is meant for them and their families.
Pa Amat Manneh, Project Engineer, at the Ministry of Transport, Works and Infrastructure, stated that the Ministry will take all the necessary measures to ensure the smooth management of the project.
He also stated that upon completion, the road will significantly reduce traffic congestion on the busy Banjul / Brikama Highway.
Sheikh Tijan Jarjue, an affected family head, appealed to the authorities to facilitate the quick payment of compensation to them.
Mr. Jarjue further assured of the community of New Jeshwang’s commitment to work with the project team for the timely completion of the project.
Meanwhile, road construction from the Old Jeshwang cemetery is ongoing and it will go all the way through Sankung Sillah, Gacem, and then to Jokor in New Jeshwang. The road will be a concrete one with a proper drainage system, streetlights, and speed bumps.
